What counts as a compliance signal?
Two categories of public record are tracked. The first is the HHS Office of Inspector General’s exclusion list, which names providers barred from federal health programs and is updated monthly. The second is breach disclosures, such as patient notices and regulator filings. Either counts only after a second source confirms it.
Why can compliance stress come before a practice sale?
Compliance events raise costs and risk for owners. A breach brings notification costs, possible lawsuits and regulator attention, and an exclusion can cut a provider off from federal program revenue. For an owner already near the dental exit window, those costs can tip the decision toward selling or joining a larger group.
Many practices handle a compliance event and keep operating under the same owner for years, so a compliance signal is never presented as evidence that a practice is for sale. See a signal is not a sale.
Why are compliance signals published only in aggregate?
Exclusion and breach records are public, but publishing them by name on a market-data site would harm patients and owners and add nothing to understanding the market. Public pages show counts by state and region only, suppress small counts, and never name a dentist, a practice or a provider identifier.
Related families: regulatory signals and lifecycle signals.
Frequently asked questions
What is the federal exclusion list?
The HHS Office of Inspector General’s list of individuals and entities excluded from federal health care programs. It is updated monthly.
Does a data breach mean a dental practice will be sold?
No. Many practices recover from a breach under the same owner; a breach is one weak signal among many.
Will DDSIntel say which practices had breaches?
No. Public pages publish aggregate counts only.
Are disciplinary actions against a dentist published?
No. No public page names a dentist, and the daily briefing excludes items about one dentist’s discipline or license.
