What counts as a lifecycle signal?
Three kinds of evidence count. Career-stage events come from public license records, such as years since an owner was first licensed. Associate events show a newly licensed or relocated dentist appearing at an owner’s practice. Owner opt-ins are consented signals: an owner choosing, through a claimed record, to be open to succession conversations.
The first two are observed signals from public records and imply nothing about what an owner intends. Consented and observed signals are always kept apart.
How has the retirement picture changed?
The average U.S. dentist retired at 68.7 in 2024, up from 64.7 in 2001, and the average career grew from 37.8 to 41.3 years over the same period. A 65-year-old owner today is still several years short of the average retirement age, which is why tenure alone is weak evidence.

Why does an associate joining matter?
An associate joining an established owner’s practice can be the first step in a succession plan, because an owner-to-associate transition often begins with a period of employment before a buy-in. The signal is the arrival itself, confirmed by license and federal provider registry records showing a new dentist at the practice’s location.
How are lifecycle signals combined with others?
Lifecycle signals set the context and other families supply the events. A long-tenured owner with a new associate is in a different position from one whose license status just changed and whose entity filings show new managers. A practice with such signals that has not listed is a candidate pre-market dental practice.
