Why is a lab account at risk when a practice sells?
A new owner approves purchases, and may already have lab relationships. A DSO often centralizes vendor selection across its offices, so one decision can move many practices. A lab that sees a sale early can talk to the buyer and the dentist about case quality, turnaround and continuity before the ordering changes.
How big is the dental lab workforce?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted about 34,400 jobs for dental laboratory technicians in 2025, within a group of 64,300 jobs that includes ophthalmic and medical appliance technicians. BLS projects employment for the group to decline 2% from 2025 to 2035, so retention of accounts matters more than growth in headcount.
The group’s median wage was $47,060 in May 2025.
How do DSOs change lab purchasing?
DSOs may move to preferred-lab programs, standardized pricing or central approval, depending on the organization. A lab that has a strong relationship with individual clinicians can still be chosen, but may need to offer terms that work at group scale. See the DSO hub for how DSO growth is measured.
The share of DSO-affiliated dentists is covered in how consolidated dentistry is.
How can a lab see a sale coming?
Labs hear informally, but aggregate dental transition signals by region show where ownership changes are rising, which helps decide where to invest in relationships. A signal never means an owner intends to sell, so a lab should talk to its own customers directly and respect the owner’s confidentiality.
